The UN Headquarters in Vienna was established in 1979 and had since been one of the most important UN headquarters, apart from New York Headquarters. Seats of other important international organizations are also situated in Vienna: International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The UN Secretariat in Vienna provides administrative support to different bodies and institutions of the United Nations and is responsible for the organization of more than 2,000 conferences and meetings at this headquarters, every year.

Priority tasks of the Permanent Mission in Vienna include active monitoring, and participation in the work of the previously enumerated international organizations in all its forms, with the affirmation of the interests of the Republic of Serbia, and receiving different kinds of technical and other assistance in the realization of the agreed and already launched projects. International organizations and programmes within the UN system should provide support to the R. Serbia on its path towards reforms and EU integration.

It is necessary that international organizations and programmes in the framework of the UN system support the Republic of Serbia on its path of reform and EU integration, as reflected in the Framework of the Strategic Partnership between the UN Specialized Agencies and the Republic of Serbia, signed in 2010, whose strategic priorities are directly based on the National Strategy on Sustainable Development and the analysis of the situation in the Republic of Serbia. The set goals are comprehensive and relevant to upgrading the existing capacities, as well as formulating extensive development strategies and legal solutions in the Republic of Serbia. Furthermore, in line with its foreign policy priorities, the Permanent Mission is engaged in the activities of relevant organizations aimed at fighting organized crime and corruption, as well as in international arms control mechanisms.
